WHEN YOU DO WHAT YOU LOVE…

When my friends over at G Catering asked me to photograph their salads, I was immediately struck by the unexpected artistry in what some might view as humble fare. I told my friend Cooper—one of their talented chefs—about the shoot, and he looked me square in the eye and deadpanned, “They say when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.” It was the dryest, funniest delivery of that old adage—but beneath the humor, there was a deeply resonant truth. As much as photography is physical work, there’s an unmistakable joy in capturing light and texture on something as fresh and vibrant as a salad.

That great little joke underscored something essential: creativity doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re tossing greens or lighting a fashion shoot, the act of creating is what fuels fulfillment. And in the world of food and catering, many echo that sentiment— For that team, every salad is food yes, but it’s also a starting point for them to create.

And that’s what makes the project so compelling. There’s such joy in the act of creating—even with salads, which might be overlooked by some as mere sides. In catering, passion meets precision, transforming everyday ingredients into experiences that nourish your body and soul. Similarly, food photography is passion meets precision. Making sure every pepper flake is exactly where it needs to be. It was a great shoot and thanks to Cooper’s dry wit, that story came with a perfect line: doing what you love does feel a lot less like work—even when it technically is.
